Operations analysts examine the workings of an organization to offer solutions to problems and develop procedures for better decision-making. Most work full-time in offices but may spend time in the field gathering information through direct observation. The job may provide high stress because analysts are often under pressure to meet deadlines imposed by top managers.

Duties

Operations analysts gather information by interviewing employees, reading reports and combing through computer databases. They determine which data are relevant and what methods should be used to analyze them. They then use statistical analysis, simulation and optimization to develop practical solutions. They advise decision makers on the appropriate courses of action, write memos and reports to document their recommendations, and meet with employees after implementation of a new process to determine its effectiveness. Most analysts work in analytical teams, especially on highly complex problems, and then work with employee teams to assist with implementation of their proposals.

Education

Employers typically look for operations analyst applicants with master s degrees, though a bachelor s degree may be sufficient for some entry-level positions. Programs are typically heavy in mathematics because the job entails quantitative analysis. College courses include calculus, linear algebra, and statistics. Computer science also is important because statistical and database software is used to analyze data. Many analysts may also have additional degrees in related technical fields, such as engineering, math, physics or computer science. Continuing education is important due to the rapid advances in analytical methods and software tools.

Salaries

Operations research analysts averaged $78,840 per year, or $37.90 per hour, as of May 2011, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. However, the 10th percentile made less than $40,620, or $19.53, while the 90th percentile received over $126,000, or $60.58. Most worked for computer systems design and related services, which had 5,550 out of the total 65,030 jobs, and mean wages of $84,530, or $40.64. The highest wages were with securities and commodity brokers at an average $114,360, or $54.98. The state with the most jobs for analysts was California, with 7,860 positions, and average compensation at $84,980, or $40.86. The state with the highest paying employers was New York, with mean salaries at $117,270, or $56.38 hourly.

Prospects

The BLS sees jobs for operations research analysts increasing by 15 percent from 2010 to 2020, which is close to the 15 percent predicted for all occupations, but less than the 22 percent expected for all computer and math occupations. Driving the demand will be the need for companies to develop more efficient operations and lower expenses. The military will be a big employer of analysts. The best jobs will go to analysts who can easily communicate their recommendations to managers and workers outside of operations research. A master s or Ph.D. in the subject will also provide better opportunities.
